Tip of the Month Recipient | The August Family

All tips given the month of June will be donated to the Iris August family of Celina. Iris is 13 years old and will be an 8th grade student at Celina Middle School in the upcoming school year. Her mother is Kara August and step-father is Joe Ditmer. Kara works at Dynamic Federal Credit Union in Celina.

Iris was born with a rare congenital birth defect called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita which affects the mobility of her wrists, ankles, shoulders, hips, and knees. A Tracheotomy and placement of a feeding tube happened shortly after birth due to her under developed lungs. She grew up with hundreds of physical and occupational therapy treatments to help her gain independence in mobility. Over five years she would undergo three different Achilles Cord cutting surgeries to decrease her clubbed feet and assist with walking and standing. There were many leg castings and she was finally able to stand and walk with assistance. Growing up, Iris continued to use full leg braces and used a wheelchair to get around school and going longer distances. She still uses a manual wheelchair to assist her and goes to physical therapy two days a week. Their hope is Iris will become strong enough through physical therapy to walk independently without the need of her braces.

In March 2024, Iris was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma after noticing several lumps on her neck. Scans and labs were done at Dayton Children’s Hospital where they confirmed the lumps on her neck and found a mass near her trachea. With the location of the mass being near her airway and heart, she is having some difficulties with breathing and elevated heart rates. Iris is currently undergoing chemotherapy at Dayton Children’s Hospital. She will start radiation in July at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Kara has been unable to work full-time since March as she cares for her daughter. Kara has instilled a great faith in Iris and they lean on the Lord for strength.

Iris loves to ride her bike and spend time with her friends. Let us keep the August family in our daily prayers. Your generous tip will help cover their ongoing medical bills, and their great need for a mobile wheelchair, a handicap accessible shower, and handicap accessible vehicle. Thank you and God bless!
